About Richard Smith
Richard Smith was born in Beckenham, Kent, England in 1971. Richard started playing guitar at age 5 under the instruction of his father.
Young Richard digested everything he heard, learning even the most complicated of these tunes with ease, concentrating initially on the country picking of Chet Atkins and Merle Travis.
It seemed that not only did he possess amazing physical skill, but a photographic musical memory as well.
Often, a single hearing was all it took to get a piece under his fingers, using all ten to play bass, rhythm and melody simultaneously and creating a universe of wounds, while easily switching between thumb picking and flatpicking like hardly anybody else. Richard soon became a child prodigy on the guitar. At the age of 11 he met his idol Chet Atkins when Atkins invited Smith to play with him at the Her Majesty’s Theatre in London.
He formed the Richard Smith Guitar Trio with his brothers Rob and Sam before marrying American cellist Julie Adamas and moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1999. He founded the Hot Club of Nashville, jam bend with a varying lineup that included John Jorgenson, Pat Bergson, Bryan Sutton and Stuart Duncan combining gipsy jazz and western swing. Richard performs as a solo act and a duo with his wife. His repertoire includes country, bluegrass, blues, ragtime, folk, jazz, pop and classical music.
Smith has played with many world-renowned artists including Nato Lima of Los Indios Tabajaras, sax legends Boots Randolph and John Jorgenson of Desert Rose Banda. Tommy Emmanuel, the Australian guitar wizard prefers Richard Smith as one of his favorite duet partners. He has also performed with other great musicians such as Marcel Dadi, Joe Pass, Biréli Lagrène, Les Paul, Mark O’Connor, Sam Bush, Martin Taylor, Jorge Morel, Suzy Bogguss, Muriel Anderson, Guy Van Duse, Béla Fleck, Victor Wooten, Tony McManus and Buster B. Jones. He shared the bill with a host of others, most notably Steve Morse, Albert Lee, Paco Pena, Barney Kessel, David Russell and Johnny Hiland.
